
Rights of Passage Transitional Housing
Based on the belief that all youth have the “right” to “pass” from childhood to adulthood with support from caring and experienced adults, Rights of Passage (ROP) helps older adolescents progress from homelessness to productive lifestyles though stable residency, improved life skills and employment opportunities, and increased self-responsibility for determining their future.
Dove Community (12 beds) offers youth a three- to six-month opportunity to learn how to live on their own with the 24-hour guidance of on-site staff. Dove community youth:
- Monday through Friday afternoon and evening classes toward high school equivalency
- Share a common kitchen and living room and have their own key to one of three shared bedrooms;
- Pay 40% of income toward rent, which is placed in a savings account that is returned to youth who successfully complete their Dove Community plan;
- Purchase and prepare their own meals, with cooking lessons; and
- Maintain employment, open a checking account, and adhere to a budget, participate in counseling sessions, practice new life skills, and pursue education including high school equivalency classes.
Rights of Passage Apartment Living (ROPAL) (16 beds) offers youths up to two years of independent living in a furnished apartment with supportive case management. ROPAL youth:
- Life Skills Education through intensive one-to-one case management and group counseling to foster mastery of:
- Maintain employment and pay the landlord 30% of gross income toward rent;
- Split utility and common bills with a roommate;
- Participate in weekly counseling sessions and case manager home visits; and
- Adhere to a budget, practice new life skills and continue to work on educational and vocational goals.
ROPAL is patially funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
