Volunteer Opportunities

 

With the special support that volunteers provide, Covenant House Florida is able to provide a wide variety of services for youths. Find out what you can do to make a difference in your community. We are happy to discuss your schedule, your interests, and your skills and talents in order to make the match that is right for you and for the adolescents you wish to help.

Employment Assistants

Assist our Employment Assistance Case Manager with teaching job searching and interviewing skills to residents of the shelter.  Perform varied employment related tasks including assisting youth with completing employment applications and developing professional resumes.

Donation/Clothing Room Assistants

Help us to sort through donated items (clothing, food, and household goods) and assist with maintaining clean and organized clothing rooms for our residents and their children.

Direct Care Assistants

Assist our Case Management team by helping to guide and monitor the daily activities of our residents.  Previous experience with older adolescents preferred.  Ability to set and maintain firm limits with adolescents is required.

Food Services Assistants

Assist our food service staff in a support capacity by preparing and serving meals to youth.  Help with maintaining a clean and organized kitchen and dining area.

Garden Specialist

This individual would be responsible to maintain indoor and outdoor plants, to include fertilizing, mulching, and weeding.

Housekeeping Assistants

Assist our staff with collecting, washing, and folding linens, distributing fresh towels and bed linens to our residents, assisting with general housekeeping tasks in order to maintain a clean and safe physical environment for our residents and their children.

Morning Assistants

Assist residents to have a positive and productive day by helping them to wake up, complete their chores, eat breakfast, and to get organized and to appointments on time.  Assist parents of infants/toddlers.

Pastoral Assistants

Assist with supervising and monitoring residents of the crisis shelter while they attend pre-arranged spiritual activities and/or events.  Valid Florida driver’s license and good driving record is required.  Must be open to religious diversity and be willing to foster spiritual growth according to the policies, standards, religious principles and values of Covenant House.

Recreation Assistants

Assist staff with researching, planning, organizing, and facilitating free or low cost recreational activities for residents and/or their children.  Responsibilities would involve escorting/accompanying youth on recreational outings, creating a positive and safe environment, and supervising organized recreational activities.  Valid Florida driver’s license and good driving record is required.

Supply Drive Coordinators

Assist Covenant House by coordinating a supply drive at your work, school, or church for items needed by our youth on a daily basis.  This type of volunteer does not require individuals to complete a volunteer application.  Interested individuals should contact Barry Fuentez at 407-736-9004.

 

Qualifications

  • Over 21 years old

  • Non-judgmental, accepting attitude

  • Ability to set and maintain firm limits with adolescents

  • Mature, emotionally stable and of no threat to vulnerable populations

  • Sound interpersonal and communication skills

  • Time availability to maintain a set schedule for volunteering

Training

  • 6 hours pre-service training

  • Ongoing in-service training

  • Notification of applicable seminars and workshops offered through Covenant House and elsewhere
